Soccer Ball and a lot of learning

A few weeks back, I did a cake with a butter based buttercream and was reminded how super soft it gets in humid weather. So, this time around I tried something different...something I've read a lot about but was afraid to try...covering and crumb-coating the cake in ganache.  Ganache is just melted chocolate along with heavy cream...but it has to have the right consistency to form a hard shell around the cake...giving you a smooth surface to cover in fondant.

I have been following Jessica Harris, a cake master, for a while and her cakes are ahh-mazing.  She is so kind to answer questions, give advice and show pictures on her blog of how she creates such beautiful cakes. Although mine look nothing like hers, I have to give her credit and all she has put out there to help so many of us who enjoy cakes.  If you haven't seen her work, check it out here.

So, here's the result of a few firsts.  The first ganache covered cake, first ball cake, and first time decorating with modeling chocolate.  I learned a lot...for sure.  Enjoy! :)

space and frills

This past weekend was opposites, for sure.  Chase was all about space and rockets, while Bethany's world was ballerina's and twirls.  I was pleased with how both turned out! Happy birthday to the new 4 year olds! :)

congrats to Jodie

I know Jodie is glad to be done with nursing school! Her husband, Wes, contacted me a few months back to let me in on the surprise party that was given a few week ago.  This was my first "nursing themed" cake.  Can you guess what my favorite part is on top with a needle sticking in it? :)  That was just for you, Jodie!

Oh, and congratulations to the new nurses job...in the NICU at Levine Children's Hospital!  Those babies are lucky to have you!

Winter Wedding...updated

I had the honor of having a small part of the new Mr.and Mrs. Steven and Chelsi White's wedding at the beginning of December.  Her theme was Winter White, with burlap and branches.  The decorations were so simple but so gorgeous.  I love the simplicity of it all and the bride was absolutely gorgeous! The wedding was featured on several different sites, including East Coast Bride.  Check it out here.
The pictures below were taken by Jen Yuson Photography. Check out more of her work at www.jenyuson.com

Teal Diva

I had the privilege of making a cake for a charity event held for the Teal Diva's this past weekend.  Before then, I'd never heard of them or their remarkable stories.  These ladies are ovarian cancer survivors and want to celebrate life.  To read more about each of them and how the Teal Diva came to be, events happening or to donate, visit their site here.

Little Ladybug

Ladybug cake for Miss Avery, who turned one last week. The cake was strawberry with the ladybug "smash" cake on top for the birthday girl! The cupcakes were vanilla bean.

After taking the pictures, cleaning up the kitchen, and getting ready for bed, I kept thinking about the little ladybugs crawling around the cake...so I went back and added some :)

Happy Birthday Avery!
